FOCUS 1.5 adds AI token tracking

Updated: September 19, 2026

By the LLM CFO team

FOCUS 1.5 is confirmed for December 2026 and adds two things the specification has never carried: native AI token tracking inside the Cost and Usage dataset, and a separate Price Sheet dataset for provider list pricing. Together they make token-based AI spend comparable and portable across providers, the way FOCUS already made cloud billing comparable.

What is actually in it

Two additions, and the second matters more than its billing gets:

1. AI model identity and token consumption in Cost and Usage

The consumption record gains fields for which model served a charge and how many input and output tokens it consumed, with worked examples for token-based and generation-based billing. Today that information either does not survive the provider's export or arrives in a provider-specific shape you have to parse per vendor. After 1.5, the shape is the same everywhere.

2. A Price Sheet dataset

List pricing gets its own standardized representation, separate from the consumption record. This is the quieter but more useful half. Keeping price separate from usage means you can finally compute two things directly from the data:

Why this matters more than a normal point release

Token spend has been the one large technology cost with no standard billing shape. Every provider meters differently, cached and reasoning tokens price on their own scales, and the ratios move whenever a model changes underneath you. That is why the State of FinOps 2026 survey put granular AI spend monitoring - tokens, requests, GPU utilization - at the top of the most-requested capability list across all 1,192 respondents.

FOCUS 1.5 does not deliver that capability, but it removes the excuse that the data is unobtainable. Once tokens are a first-class billing field, a tool that cannot report on them by model is choosing not to.

What FOCUS 1.5 will not do

Be clear about this before you plan around it, because the gap is where most teams get caught:

How to be ready, using work that pays for itself now

Every item below is useful before 1.5 ships and maps directly onto a 1.5 field afterwards:

Do this nowWhy it maps cleanly
Store token counts by type, never as one totalInput and output are separate fields in 1.5. A single blended total cannot be split back apart.
Keep model identity on every recordModel identity is a first-class 1.5 field and the basis of every per-model comparison.
Retain provider list prices at time of useThe Price Sheet dataset is a point-in-time view. Historical list prices are not reliably recoverable later.
Reconcile internal records to the invoice monthly1.5 will make the provider's version authoritative and comparable. An unreconciled internal figure becomes visibly wrong. See invoice reconciliation.
Tag at the gateway: feature, environment, team, customerThe one thing FOCUS will never supply. Emit it via OpenTelemetry GenAI conventions.

The wider signal

FOCUS 1.5 did not arrive alone. The same window produced the Tokenomics Foundation launch on 4 August 2026, and the announcement that from 2027 FinOps X becomes Tokenomicon, a Linux Foundation conference built around the economics of AI, with FinOps X continuing as a co-located practitioner track. The flagship runs in San Diego, 7-10 June 2027, with regional events in Amsterdam and London.

A specification adding token fields, a new standards body, and a conference renamed around the unit is three independent bodies agreeing on the same thing: the token is now the unit of enterprise technology spend, and the accounting is being built after the fact. Being early to the schema is cheap. Retrofitting it is not.
