OpenAI Ultrafast API Pricing and Speed

Updated: October 7, 2026

OpenAI Ultrafast speeds up GPT-6 Astra output generation at six times Standard token prices. The current guide claims up to eight times faster generation; the DevDay announcement described up to six times. Neither guarantees end-to-end latency. Compare the added inference charge with measured completion time and business value before routing production traffic to it.

What does Ultrafast change?

Ultrafast reduces the time between generated output tokens. It does not make every part of a request eight times faster: input processing, network setup, tools, application code, and waiting on external services still affect total latency. OpenAI recommends WebSockets, especially for agents that make several tool calls in quick succession, because connection overhead can erase some of the gain.

How much does GPT-6 Astra Ultrafast cost?

OpenAI’s pricing table lists the following per one million text tokens for short-context GPT-6 Astra requests:

TierInputCached inputCache writeOutput
Standard$10$1$12.50$50
Ultrafast$60$6$75$300

Ultrafast is 6× the listed Standard rate for each token category. Check the live pricing page before budgeting because rates and eligibility can change. Ultrafast supports global processing and US data residency; it does not support EU or other non-US regional processing endpoints. Regional and FedRAMP price adjustments may apply where supported.

What does the premium mean per task?

Here is a hypothetical uncached request with 8,000 input tokens and 2,000 output tokens. At Standard rates it costs $0.18: $0.08 for input and $0.10 for output. At Ultrafast rates it costs $1.08: $0.48 for input and $0.60 for output. The premium is $0.90 per task. This example uses published token prices and assumed token counts; it does not predict a workload’s latency or business value.

For a real workload, multiply monthly input, cached-input, cache-write, and output tokens by the current prices for each tier. Keep the same model, prompts, reasoning settings, and task mix when comparing tiers.

When is Ultrafast worth the premium?

Test it on work where model generation time affects a measurable outcome: an interactive assistant with a latency target, a live workflow waiting on the next action, or an agent where faster turns reduce paid idle time. Compare p50 and p95 end-to-end completion time, success rate, and cost per successful task. Use the premium only when the measured time saved has more value than the incremental cost.

For offline enrichment, scheduled summaries, and other work that can wait, Standard or a discounted processing option may fit better. Keep a fallback route for requests that exceed the Ultrafast rate limit.

Who can use it, and what limits apply?

OpenAI’s current Ultrafast guide says GPT-6 Astra access is available to API customers at default rate limits. The documented default token-per-minute limits are 500,000 for Build, 1,000,000 for Launch, and 5,000,000 for Grow. Higher limits may require an OpenAI account-team request.
